A refrigerant recovery machine is a portable device used by HVAC and refrigeration technicians to remove refrigerant from an air conditioning or refrigeration system and transfer it into a certified recovery cylinder. Its purpose is to recover refrigerant safely, prevent releases to the atmosphere, and prepare a system for service, repair, or disposal.
How Recovery Machines works
A recovery machine acts like a specialized compressor. It:
- Connects to the system through the service ports.
- Draws refrigerant (vapor, liquid, or both) from the system.
- Compresses and often cools the refrigerant.
- Pumps it into a certified recovery cylinder.
Many machines can automatically switch from liquid recovery to vapor recovery to maximize speed and recover as much refrigerant as possible.
Main components
Typical recovery machines include:
- Compressor – Moves the refrigerant from the system to the recovery cylinder.
- Condenser – Helps cool compressed refrigerant.
- Oil separator – Reduces the amount of oil carried into the recovery cylinder.
- High-pressure safety switch – Shuts the machine off if discharge pressure becomes excessive.
- Inlet filter – Protects internal components from debris.
- Valves and gauges – Allow technicians to control the recovery process.
Recovery Methods
Most machines support one or more recovery methods:
Vapor Recovery
Removes refrigerant in vapor form. It’s slower but useful when little liquid refrigerant remains.
Liquid recovery: Transfers liquid refrigerant directly. This is much faster when the system contains a large liquid charge.
Push-pull Recovery
Used for systems with large refrigerant charges (such as chillers or supermarket systems). It transfers liquid refrigerant rapidly by using pressure differences.

Modern recovery machines are often compatible with refrigerants such as:
R-134a
R-410A
R-32
R-404A
R-407C
R-22 (where still encountered)
Many newer HFO and low-GWP refrigerants (compatibility depends on the machine)

What Size Machine Will I Need
The right refrigerant recovery machines for a 5-ton chiller depends more on the refrigerant charge than the cooling capacity itself. A 5-ton system can have anywhere from 10 to over 50 pounds (4.5–23 kg) of refrigerant, depending on the type of chiller and refrigerant used.
For most 5-ton chillers:
A 1 HP recovery machine is generally sufficient for routine service work. A dual-cylinder, oil-less recovery machine is preferred because it recovers refrigerant significantly faster than single-cylinder models.
If the chiller has a large refrigerant charge (30–50+ lb), a machine with liquid recovery and push-pull capability can save considerable time.
Typical recovery rates
Recovery speed depends on the refrigerant, ambient temperature, hose size, and whether you’re recovering liquid or vapor.
Liquid recovery: Often 10–25 lb/min under favorable conditions.
Vapor recovery: Typically 0.5–2 lb/min, much slower once only vapor remains.
For example, recovering a 40 lb charge might take:
2–5 minutes for the liquid portion.
10–30 minutes to finish the remaining vapor.
